“Beautify your inner dialogue. Beautify your inner world with love light and compassion. Life will be beautiful.”
We keep trying to reach it.
Searching, aiming, wishing, and praying.
Sometimes it’s right in front of us. We’re just too busy looking for it in different places, that we haven’t stopped to realize- what you’re searching for is within reach. Many times it’s simply what you say to yourself.
It happened to me today. As I was washing dishes, merely just doing the task because it needed to be done. I guess you could say, I was a little lost, distracted, unattached from people and things around me. The dialogue in my mind was far from positive, loving, or kind. As I completed this at first so mundane task dish by dish, trying to drown out the sounds of noisy children in the back ground, my eyes rested on a chipmunk eating bread crumbs my 5 year had old put out so lovingly hours before. At that very moment I felt the coldness of the water against my hands, the slippery soapy bubbles, and the noise that I was trying so hard to drown out, was actually pleasant and joyful to my ears. It was the sounds of my children laughing hysterically, happily and content. I watched, listened, and walked over to stroke their heads, completely enveloping myself in their moment.
Just a simple shift in my thoughts made a huge shift in the rest of my day. I felt elevated, I felt loved, I felt cared for, and I felt important. Everything that I was lost in a few moments ago, seemed minuscule in comparison to what I had in front of me. My inner dialogue changed from,
“I can’t do this, I’m just so tired”, to “Inshallah, I can do this and Allah swt is sufficient for me.”
“I feel so lost, so distant”, to “I am here right now, in the presence of warmth and love.”
“I wish I had nothing to do”, to “I feel blessed and rewarded for the ability to do”.
We don’t have to look very far to decide how we want to experience our present moment. We just have to open our hearts to what’s going on around. For me, it took a moment to pause on something other than my thoughts. That something happened to be a chipmunk which brought me back to my Now, my present moment.
This shift in perspective can be elicited by children, friends, nature, love, neighbors. Whatever is around you at a moment of distress or distance, pause, look deep, fall deep into that moment, and ask Allah swt to guide you towards extracting from it little precious gems of blessings. Gems that will bring your thoughts out of the past and future, and to where you are suppose to be, your present!
