“Change I can’t to I can, and pretty soon you will be saying, I did”! (unknown)
Thoughts are simply thoughts until we ascribe meaning to them, and start believing them. Lets put this to the test.
Say to yourself,
“I am a blue orange.”
There is nothing true about that statement. Reality is, you do not really believe you are a blue orange. However, it was a thought that occupied space in your head. Just because you have a thought in your mind at any given moment does not make it the truth.
Try counting how many false self-defeating thoughts pour in, and out of your mind on a given day. Statements such as, ” I can’t do this, I’m not good enough, I’m not worth it.”
These statements are thoughts just like any other that have no power over you, until you start to believe them. Only because you have failed at something, or not achieved what you set out for, does not make such statements a reality. Know that the world is full of obstacles and contradictions lending to times for both failure and success.
The key is to recognize these thoughts and rid yourself off them. Replace self defeating statements with positive ones such as “I can do this, of course I’m good enough, and I am someone special.”
One effective way to overcome negative thoughts about yourself is to watch out for those that are lead by words such as always, never, should, must. These words are called absolutes, as they only allow us to think in all or nothing terms. Absolutes are simple for our minds to make up, easy to believe, but seldom the truth.
Next time a negative thought pops into your head. Remember, it’s just a thought, not a reality, and allow it to pass.
